Back at the cafe, I risked a run-in with Frank the overzealous building inspector and bolted upstairs for a scalding-hot shower—the only cure I knew for post-dumpster-dive grime. After scrubbing off potential germs and drying off, I slipped into a clean sundress and sandals. Disinfected and slightly more human, I headed back down to the cafe.

On my way down, I texted Sinclair: Found possible evidence. Bottle of Scorched!!! Plus, a bottle of anxiety meds for a Dale Wubbels. Whoever that is …

Her response came seconds later: Won’t ask where you found them …

Me: Yeah, not my best moment.

Sinclair: Meet me at theater at 3 p.m.

In the cafe, I poured myself an Iced Alibi to give myself a reset. Once properly caffeinated, I carefully transported each of the bottles from the Dollar Dash bag into individual sandwich baggies.

Hazel stood tapping her foot. “You gonna fill me in or what?”

“Well, I went dumpster diving. That was an experience.”

“Gross!”

“I know. But this is a potential murder investigation. Don’t worry. I showered.”

“What did you find?” She nodded toward the bags.

I held up the one with the hot chili pepper sauce. “This one is obvious. Scorched!!! And I’m guessing Ivory’s fingerprints are all over it.”

“Oh, she’s totally busted!”

I held up the baggie with the prescription bottle. “The name Dale Wubbels ring any bells?”

“Dale Wubbels? No. Why?”

“The prescription is for him. Anxiety meds. I’m guessing the same ones found in Lucinda’s system.”

Hazel took out her phone and began typing. “Hmm. No Dale Wubbels in the area, but I’ll get Leland to look into it.”

“That’s my girl.”

The afternoon was looking up. I had some physical evidence now—the hot sauce was at least enough to implicate Ivory. She and this Dale Wubbels might have been co-conspirators.

Yet … Something still felt off.
